The Great Database Mess

After nearly three days of sleepless nights, thanks to my webhost, the majority of the data residing in the OS database has been recovered.  Unfortunately, the last back-up which my webhost did occured a few hours before the OS website was last updated, so some of the posts in the Tagboard and members who registered on 10/01/2005 onwards are gone.  I am REALLY sorry for this, but since I didn’t have a back-up of the database, I was pretty much under the mercy of what data my webhost’s last back-up contained.

Anyway, what happened that started this mess?

As an administrator and owner of this domain, it’s one of my responsibilities to periodically check for any stray file in each directory and/or stray information in the database.  I was doing just that on the early morning of October 5.  I was in my domain’s control panel, checking things.  Then, I saw it.  A script installation that I did, which I had removed ages ago.  But it was still showing there for no apparent reason.  So, I went to the “Delete installation” page and quickly pressed the “OK” button, without realizing that deleting said installation would also remove the database that it was installed in.  Yes, you guessed it right:  That database was the very same database where the OS data (including the gallery data) was housed in.

As soon as I saw the message that said database was removed, I panicked.  I went to the OS website and nearly fainted when I saw the message “(database name) cannot be found.” Oh, no.  OH, NO. I had done the worst crime that an administrator could possibly ever do.  I just stared blankly into the screen for a few seconds before I took action.  I sent an urgent inquiry to my webhost, asking them if it was possible to restore a database that was accidentally removed.  They assured me that it was possible, but I had to pay a price.  I had to pay $75 for the restoration.  At this point, I hardly cared if I even spent $150 for it.  It was my entirely my fault and I was prepared to face the consequences.

Nearly 3 days later (and an apology from my webhost, stating that they were sorry it was taking a while; I just love Lunarpages <3), I got a notice from one of their technicians telling me that the database has been recovered.  And, so, here I am writing this and fixing things over at the Gallery because apparently, the back-up didn’t include the last Gallery uploads (the images from Ongaku Sessions).  grrr

So, now, everything’s back to normal and I assure you that I will NEVER make that mistake ever again.  Once is enough.  I’ve also learned to keep frequent back-ups of the database files. :red:

Again, I sincerely apologize for all this mess.  T.T
