2006 UP Tomo-Kai Anniversary Celebrations

This year’s anniversary celebration is scheduled on July 7 & 17-21, to precede the 1st National Commemoration of the Philippines-Japan Friendship Day. At the same time, this year marks the Philippines and Japan’s 50 years of camaraderie. The following activities have been slated for the weeklong event, all open and free for students of the University and other friends.

Anniversary Week Prequel: July 7, 2006
Happy Birthday TK! Maligayang Kaarawan TK!

A happy occasion on the day that marks the actual commemoration of U.P Tomo-Kai’s creation. As a prelude to the anniversary week activities, U.P students and Japanese friends gather in an afternoon of food, fun, friendship and cultural exchange. A beautifully decorated Tomo-Kai tambayan will be open to all who want to take part in this simple, yet remarkable event.

Anniversary Week Proper: July 17, 2006 (Day 1)
Opening Ceremonies & Interactive Cultural Exhibit

To officially open the anniversary week, an interactive cultural exhibit will be set up in one of the busiest spots in the University, the Palma Hall Lobby. Showcasing an impressive array of arts, the exhibit booths including ikebana (flower arrangement), origami (paper folding), kitsuke (kimono wearing), shodou (calligraphy), and sadou (tea ceremony), and a Tanabata tree, will be featured, acquainting the U.P. community with some of the most essential aspects of the Japanese culture. At the same time, booths on Filipino arts like Alibata, traditional costumes and native music will also be presented to truly uphold our own cultural pride. Arnis masters will also be invited to showcase their knowledge and expertise. These enchanting exhibitions definitely attract students passing by to take part in the delightful festivities and gain new insights on the two cultures that are highlighted. A visual exhibit of Filipino and Japanese-related articles and items, which would prove informative, useful and educational to the U.P. community, will also be displayed throughout the week.

Anniversary Week Proper: July 18, 2006 (Day 2)
Ramen & Pulvoron Eating Relay

Food is definite common denominator in all cultures and this is the focus for the anniversary week’s second day activity. Contestants from other U.P organizations as well as Japanese friends will race through an obstacle course and compete to be the fastest eaters to win the exciting prizes. Planned to be held in a populated walkway, cheering org-mates and passers-by alike will be able to root for the team of their choice.

Anniversary Week Proper: July 20, 2006 (Day 3)
KISSATEN, The TK Cafe

Brought back by popular demand, this one day - cafe is situated in the Palma Hall lobby, a common tambayan for freshmen and upper classmen alike. Set up as authentically as possible, with throw pillows, a low table and girls in kimonos as servers, this cafe caters to tired students wanting to relax and take a breather. Japanese green tea, Filipino kapeng barako and some snacks will be served supporting the ambiance of a true cafe. Books and table games will also be available, as well as film showings of amusing movies to provide for a little bit of learning in a relaxed environment.
