Ongaku Society is the premiere contemporary Japanese music community for Filipino fans. OS organizes the highly popular series of Ongaku events, as well as collaborates with major local companies and institutions – including Toei Animation Philippines, HERO TV, COSPLAY.PH, UP AME, and the Japan Foundation Manila, in helping raise awareness for popular Japanese culture here in the Philippines.
Ongaku Society was established on May 10, 2003 to unite and promote the spirit of camaraderie among Filipino Japanese music enthusiasts across all music genres. Originally a mailing list created by three band buddies, Ongaku Society now runs the largest Filipino website dedicated to Japanese music. The OS website (http://www.ongaku-society.org) has over one thousand registered members, features the most up-to-date information on local fan scene happenings, and contains more interactive J-pop content for Filipino fans than any other local Japanese music site.
The organization also plays host to Ongaku events held twice yearly, where local bands influenced by popular Japanese music showcase their talent to loyal and appreciative fans of Japanese pop, rock, college punk, and anime music. Since the first gig in 2004 entitled Ongaku Rave, each successive Ongaku Society event has become bigger, better, and more popular. From Ongaku Festival (2004), Ongaku Sessions (2005), Ongaku Project (2006), Ongaku Fusion (2006), Ongaku Rewind (2007), and all the way to up to our twin events Ongaku on the Block (2007) and Ongaku Fresh Meet (2007), OS has played host to over one thousand local J-rock and J-pop fans from all over Metro Manila.
And we’re just getting started! Ongaku Society has also helped out in several major local events and conventions, including Toei Animation Philippines’ Toeinty Anime! and HERO TV’s Hataw Hanep Hero, where we served up rocking J-pop tunes to thousands of aficionados. OS was also privileged to have been invited by the Japan Foundation Manila to their 2007 NihonGo Festa celebrations, where Ongaku Society worked hand in hand with other Japanese cultural organizations in a show of solidarity and togetherness.
Ongaku Society helps foster music development by encouraging its mainstay bands to explore their talents beyond being mere cover acts, nurturing them to develop their own unique sound with a combination of Filipino, Japanese, and Western musical influences. Currently, several Ongaku Society bands boast of a line-up of original songs, which we hope to encourage further in future activities organized by both the club and our many friends and supporters.
We are Ongaku Society. Never let the music die down!
